6061 and 7075 Aluminum Alloys: How to Select the Ideal Material Based on Requirements?

2026,01,19
In CNC machining, aluminum alloys are widely favored for their lightweight properties, high strength, and excellent machinability. Among them, 6061 and 7075 are two extremely widely used aluminum alloys, but their characteristics and suitable applications differ. This article will delve into the properties of these two materials and how to select the ideal material based on specific requirements.

. What Are 6061 and 7075 Aluminum Alloys?

6061 Aluminum Alloy is a heat-treatable aluminum alloy primarily alloyed with magnesium and silicon. It offers good mechanical properties, excellent weldability, and corrosion resistance, coupled with moderate strength. 6061 is easy to machine and anodize, making it widely used in aerospace, automotive components, bicycle frames, marine structures, and general machinery manufacturing.

. What is 7075 Aluminum Alloy?

7075 aluminum alloy, primarily alloyed with zinc, is a typical high-strength aluminum alloy. Its strength rivals that of many steels, yet its density is only about one-third that of steel. 7075 aluminum alloy is typically used in applications demanding extremely high strength, such as aircraft structural components, high-strength sports equipment, and mold machining. However, its corrosion resistance is relatively poor, and its weldability is inferior to that of 6061.

. Differences Between 6061 & 7075 Aluminum Alloys

1. Mechanical Properties

6061: Optimal balance of strength and toughness, with excellent fatigue resistance.

7075: Strength comparable to steel, but lower toughness; may exhibit brittle fracture under severe impact.

2. Corrosion Resistance and Surface Treatment

6061: Naturally corrosion-resistant with excellent anodizing results and easy coloring.

7075: Prone to corrosion (especially stress corrosion), poor anodizing results, often requiring aluminum cladding or specialized coatings for protection.

3. Machinability (Impact on Manufacturing Services)

CNC Machining: 6061 is the “universal machinable aluminum,” offering smooth cutting and excellent surface finish; 7075 can also be precision machined but causes greater tool wear.

Sheet Metal Fabrication: For Sheet Metal Bending or complex forming, 6061 is preferred; 7075 is difficult to form.

Joining Processes:

For Sheet Metal Welding, 6061 is mandatory; 7075 requires riveting or adhesive bonding.

. How to Select?

Choose 6061 when:

Comprehensive performance and corrosion resistance are required.

Design involves welding, complex bending, or deep machining.

Cost control is a critical factor.

Suitable for most general structural components and precision parts.

Select 7075 when:

Weight reduction and ultimate strength are absolute priorities.

Applications endure extreme stress (e.g., aerospace, competitive sports components).

Welding can be avoided, and its corrosion resistance drawbacks can be mitigated through processing.

Budget permits and willingness to pay a premium for performance exists.
